Currently, I live just outside of Nanaimo in the great community of Cedar. I have lived there for just over 10 years. I have a wonderful wife Susan, whom I married 15 years ago. Together, we have a wonderful two and a half year old son named Lucas. I find it amazing to watch my son using technology like Skype to communicate with family members on the other side of the country.
I have just completed the first (OLTD 501) of ten courses required to complete a Graduate Diploma in Online Learning and Teaching (OLTD) program at Vancouver Island University. i have learned many new computer skills that I hope to try out in my classroom over the next few years. For example, the audio podcast will be a great addition to stop motion animation project I will be creating with some of my students. In addition, the Pecha Kucha assignment has also taught me that creating open ended projects can provide students with a very powerful learning experience.
I strongly believe that when I can provide my students with creative ways to demonstrate their learning, I will be helping them take their learning to a whole new level. Instead of me trying to find ways to “fix” the learning challenges of my students, I can find ways to enhance their individual abilities. I believe that when students are provided with activities that enhance their abilities, they will choose to participate in an activity. By making the choice to participate in an activity, a higher level of learning will occur. As an online educator, I need to develop activities that focus on enhancing abilities not trying to fix challenges
