By enrolling in the Graduate Diploma in Online Learning and Teaching (OLTD) program at Vancouver Island University, I hope that I will become more competent in creating a more blended type of learning environment. I want to be able to learn online educational activities so that I can bring them into my classroom. I can share my knowledge with my students and provide them with learning opportunities that will prepare them for the world of tomorrow. In addition, I need to share my knowledge and experience with other teachers so they can provide their students with online learning activities.
I would like to have a classroom where art and math can be done in an online environment. For art, I would like to develop 30 online art lessons that focus on the grade five art curriculum. This would not be me alone, but I would like to get a group on grade five teachers who would be interested in doing the same thing. We would then work to create a series of grade five art lessons and rubrics that can be viewed or shared with other grade five teachers within the province.
For math, I would like to find an online math program that allows individuals to login at anytime from anywhere in the world and progress through the math at their own pace. There are some online math programs currently available like this, but the students must be strong readers. There are many students at the grade 5 level who are not strong enough readers to do word problem based math. I have contacted one company from Albert who said that they are working on an online math program that reads the text to students. They should have this ready by Christmas of 2012.
