OLTD 507 - Cloud Computing
Leveraging the use of the cloud for education is the focus of this course. Students will explore what cloud computing can offer, investigate the educational applications, consider pros and cons, have confidence with some of the tools, while understanding the legal and privacy protection issues
surrounding cloud computing.
Evidence: Building an online lesson
OLTD Outcome Addressed: Develop an online lesson/unit using cloud tools effectively.
The specific evidence that I have chosen was the lesson/unit I developed around cyber safety. In this piece, I created a website that included three lessons that focused on grade 5 learning about the internet, personal information and being kind online.
This piece of evidence was created using a variety cloud based tools to help students learn and represent their learning. For this assignment, I was asked to create a lesson or series of lessons for use in an online setting using one of these course design principles (Project based learning, Flipped model or the Standard Online course design practice [anticipatory set, new learning, practice and assessment]). Although, it took me a long time to research and implement some cloud based tools, I can certainly appreciate the importance of choosing tools that are appropriate for the grade level.
By completing this lesson/unit on cyber safety, I learned that educators need to understand how to incorporate Universal Design for Learning principles into their lessons. I have come to the conclusion that including multiple means of representation, multiple means of representation and multiple means of engagement. Equally as important, educators need to understand best practice for using the cloud considering the BC FIPPA laws.
As an online educator, I need to be up-to-date with appropriate cloud tools and teach my students how to stay safe while using the internet as a tool to enhance their learning. In addition, I need to teach my students how to protect their identity while using the internet and a variety of cloud tools. When I provide my students with the knowledge of how to stay safe and how to protect their identity they will be engage in the activity and learning will take place. Education today is incorporating more and more technology. As the internet and Web 2.0 tools are being used in a variety of learning environments, it is important that educators teach students about Cyber Safety. Because of my experiences in OLTD 506, I have the knowledge to design online lessons that incorporate a variety of cloud tools, include Universal Design for Learning principles, and that attempt to enhance the learning potential of my students.

Evidence: Survey of Cloud Tools and Presentation
OLTD Outcome Addressed: Become familiar with cloud tools through hands on experimentation.
The specific evidence that I have chosen was the survey of cloud tools presentation. For this piece, I created an online tool that can provides an easy way for teachers to assess the effectiveness of online tools.
This piece of evidence was created using Google Docs and was one of my projects for OLTD 507. This project was designed to help me build the skills and the confidence to use cloud in a f2f, blended or online classroom. Additionally, this project was designed for me to create a useable document that I could share with my colleagues within the teaching profession. Although I was unsure of the benefits of creating such a document, I quickly realized the benefits. When I can create a document that provides a quick reference for other educators regarding the pros and cons of different web tools, it can save them a lot of time and point them in the direction of effective cloud tools.
By completing this assignment, I was able create a list of cloud tools that I could use in my f2f classroom. This document was designed to inform myself and colleagues about the purpose and benefits of using a particular cloud tool. In addition, this document was designed for educators to obtain parental consent, communicate potential risks, outline acceptable use policies, establish online etiquette and inform parents of their responsibilities. When creating policies for using social media tools, I needed to be aware of existing provincial guidelines for using cloud tools in an educational setting and tools can be beneficial for student learning. More importantly, what “Privacy” and “Terms of Use” concerns are related to each tool.
As an online educator, it is important I use a variety of cloud tools and incorporate UDL principles that allow all students to maximize their learning potential and represent their learning in a variety of ways. I need to choose tools that allow students to communicate, collaborate, share and learn in a positive and productive way. Because of my experiences in OLTD 507, I have the background knowledge required to use a variety of cloud tools for educational purposes. All students have the capacity to learn, grow and mature intellectually given opportunities to develop and practice the skills.
