OLTD 501 - Introduction to Online Learning - Competencies and Environments
An introduction to fundamental research, theories, design models, and technologies applied to effective online teaching. Students review program expectations and outcomes and define the infrastructure of informed practice for digital learning environments. Copyright, licensing, and appropriate use issues are considered. Learning supported objectives are investigated relative to a diversity of environments.
Pecha Kucha
Evidence: Pecha Kucha
OLTD Learning outcome addressed: Demonstrate
basic competency with design and implementation within a variety of online learning environments and tools.
In this piece, I was able to demonstrate what “I Image” the ideal learning environment would look like. I was able to communicate this through a series of images that depicted what I was thinking.
This piece of evidence was the Pecha Kucha that was created through Microsoft Power Point. A Pecha Kucha is a presentation method in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each. In addition, a piece of music is imbedded into the slide presentation to enhance to the presentation of the ideas. This activity enabled me to demonstrate my thoughts in a non-traditional way. It allowed me to personalize my learning. Although, this was my first attempt at a PowerPoint presentation, I was able to learn a variety of computer skills that demonstrated my competency with computers. Furthermore, because of the technical nature of the activity, I was highly engaged and motivated to work on and complete the activity.
Although, this was my first attempt at creating a PowerPoint presentation, I quickly learned the skills needed to complete the task. I learned that this is a very creative way to engage learners to think deeply about a topic and demonstrate their learning. Because I was able to include ideas and images that are important to me, I was able to personalize my presentation. In addition, I also learned the importance of self-motivation and how important self motivation can be to learning.
As an online educator, I need to be up-to-date with technology so that I can provide my students with more activities like this. When I provide my students with activities where they are self-motivated, they will be engaged in the activity and learning will take place. When I provide my students with activities where they are self-motivated, they will be engaged in the activity and learning will take place. In addition, I need to share my knowledge and experience with other teachers so they can provide their students with online learning activities.

Podcast for Slidedeck
Evidence: Podcast for Slidedeck
OLTD Learning outcome addressed: Develop skills to optimize learning experiences through personalization.
In this piece, I was able to create a podcast that provided solutions to challenges described in the Slidedeck presentation.
This piece of evidence was the Podcast for Slidedeck that was created using Audacity audio software. A Slidedeck is a presentation method in which 28 slides are presented with challenges provided on each slide. After viewing the slides, my partner and I were able to write and create a podcast of how we interpreted each slide. Our podcast could then be played while clicking through the slide presentation, allowing us to enhance the presentation of ideas. This activity enabled us to demonstrate our thoughts to the challenges in a non-traditional way. It allowed us to personalize the slides so that we could convert the challenges into solutions. Although, this was my first attempt at a Podcast presentation, I was able to learn a variety of computer skills that demonstrated my competency with computers. This activity, much like the Pecha Kucha and the Weebly website activities, were very motivating and engaging.
Creating a Podcast for Slidedeck was a challenging but fun activity. In order to write the script, my partner and I were able to communicate via Skype. This allowed us to communicate our thoughts and ideas with each other live. Using Skype to communicate with my partner was a fabulous way to share and
question each other’s ideas. Because we were able to communicate our interpretation of the slides, we were able to personalize the learning. I learned how important it is to pace myself while recording my script. It also made me think of how I could create and import sound files into a stop motion animation movies that some of my students have created.
I strongly believe that when I can provide my students with creative ways to demonstrate their learning, I will be helping them take their learning to a whole new level. Instead of me trying to find ways to “fix” the learning challenges of my students, I can find ways to enhance their individual abilities. I believe that when students are provided with activities that enhance their abilities, they will choose to participate in an activity.
By making the choice to participate in an activity, a higher level of learning will occur. As an online educator, I need to develop activities that focus on enhancing abilities not trying to fix challenges.
