OLTD 509 - Emergent Environments and Technologies
Emergent and evolving learner environments and technologies will be examined. Frameworks for assessing, selection, and deployment will be developed. Educational application of tools (e.g. QR codes, Smart-objects, thin film displays) along with environments (e.g. augmented reality (AR), Second Life) will be investigated to enhance student engagement.
Evidence: Creating an Online eBook
OLTD Outcome Addressed: Research and identify emerging technologies with educational applications not yet adopted by mainstream education or in early adoption phases.
The specific evidence I have chosen was a project during the week #5 seminar for OLTD 509. For this project we were to test a variety of online eBook building tools and create an online eBook. The tool I used was an online eBook is called Zooburst. I decided to attempt to create an eBook using this tool because this is a digital storytelling tool that lets anyone easily create his or her own 3D pop-up books. It was very easy for me to create an account and begin creating an e book. Although it took me a few minutes to learn how to navigate around the site and learn how to use the tools, I was able to create a 9 page eBook with 60 minutes. For my eBook, I followed a similar story line to a children’s book by Laura Numeroff titled If You Give A Pig A Pancake. For my eBook, I chose the title If You Give A Puppy Some Popcorn.
By completing this assignment, I learned that online eBook building tools are a great way to get my students to be writing short stories and reading the stories created by their peers.Although, this was my first attempt at creating an eBook, I quickly learned the skills needed to complete the task. I learned that this is a very creative way to engage learners in both writing and reading and to become an author of their own book. Because I was able to include ideas and images that are important to me, I was able to personalize my eBook. In addition, I also learned the importance of self-motivation and how important self motivation can be to learning.
As an online educator, I need to be up-to-date with technology. Being up-to-date means teaching my students how to build their own eBook using a variety of free online tools. I think this will be much more valuable for my students because it will allow them to be engaged in the writing and reading of eBooks that they create. Additionally, student will be able to become the author of their own eBook and share their eBook creations with peers in an online environment. With many education benefits, having students develop and create their own eBooks, will certainly allow them to move away from that one size fits all approach to learning. Furthermore, I need to share my knowledge and experience with other teachers so they can provide their students with online learning activities.

Evidence: OLTD 509 Final Project
OLTD Outcome Addressed: Adapt or develop a framework for assessing emerging technologies.
The specific evidence that I have chosen was the final assignment for OLTD 509. In this piece, I was able to create a Prezi presentation where I presented three emerging technologies. I then developed a filter (see image to the right) as a guide for selecting emerging technologies. In the end, this project was designed to pit the three technologies against my filter.
The specific evidence that I have chosen was my final project for OLTD 509. This project was completed using “Prezi.” Prezi is storytelling tool, much like powerpoint, for presenting ideas, but on a virtual canvas. I was able to create a Prezi presentation to summarize my learning throughout OLTD 509. Although I was unsure of how I was going to represent my learning, I chose a Prezi because I have become very familiar with this online presentation tool. I wanted to try and use some of the additional features that I have never used before. I was able to use content from course assignments to demonstrate my learning, develop a filter for selecting emerging technologies and support my conclusion about effective emerging technologies.
By completing this assignment, I was able to compare a variety of emerging technologies, reflect on my experiences using the emerging technologies and draw conclusions about the emerging technologies. In addition, it allowed me to generate concrete reasons for why I would or why I wouldn’t choose a particular emerging technology. When building an online learning environment that incorporates emerging technologies, I need to establish a set of guidelines for selecting emerging technologies. By establishing a set of guidelines and sharing them with my colleagues, other teacher may choose to incorporate emerging technologies that can enhance student engagement. As an online educator, it is important that I use emerging technologies that will fit within budget restrictions and support student learning. I need to integrate technology into my classroom and get technology into the hands of the learners, so that they can be the primary user of the technology. Additionally, it is important for me as an online educator to use a filter for selecting emerging technologies. Because of my experiences in OLTD 509, I have the background knowledge required to select appropriate emerging technologies that will support student learning.
