OLTD 504 - Learning Systems
Students will explore learning management and content management systems for hosting and organizing online learning activity. Investigations will look at proprietary (e.g. Desire2Learn), open source (e.g., Moodle), and
non-traditional systems (e.g., Web 2.0) regarding the pros and cons and technical competencies for the design of learning activities and course management.
LMS unit/course build
Evidence: LMS unit/course build
OLTD Outcome Addressed: Understand, design and commit to student success in online learning environments
The specific evidence that I have chosen was the LMS unit/course build. In this piece, I create a unit of study using a commercial Learning Management system. This piece of evidence was created using Desire 2 Learn as the Learning Management system. For this assignment, I was asked to create a unit of study using a Learning Management System. Although, it took me a long time to learn how to set up a unit/course, I could certainly save a lot of time in the future.
By completing this unit build, I learned that a LMS can provide students with everything they need in one package. Students can be provided with immediate results so they know right away how well they are doing. For me, setting up tests and quizzes to be immediately marked and have a grade assigned is a great time saver. In addition, a LMS provides the tools needed to present, moderate and support student learning, while managing students and keeping track of their progress and performance.
As an online educator, I need to be up-to-date with technology so that I effectively and efficiently build courses and units of study within a Learning Management System. When I provide my students with self-contained units of study, they will be engage in the activity and learning will take place. It is my job to stay up-to-date with technology so that my students can use the technology to maximize their learning
potential.
OLTD 504 Final Project
Evidence: OLTD 504 Final Project
OLTD Outcome Addressed:
Integration of and reflection on current learning theory as expressed in development of LMS and Non-LMS structures.
The specific evidence that I have chosen was my final project for OLTD 504. This project was completed using “Prezi.” I was able to create a Prezi presentation to show my learning throughout OLTD 504. Although I was unsure of how I was going to represent my learning, my instructor convinced me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. I was able to use content from course
assignments to demonstrate my learning and support my conclusion.
By completing this assignment, I was able to compare LMS’s and non-LMS’s, reflect on my experiences using a LMS and non-LMS tools and draw conclusions as to which method is more effective. I have come to the conclusion that with the advancement of Web 2.0 tools I could create a more effective online learning
environment because of the variety and choice I have. In addition, I will be able to build a sense of community, inspire discourse, provide content and handle assessment with a variety of Web 2.0 tools. When building an online learning environment with Web 2.0 tools, I need to follow the same guidelines as those used for LMS’s. Likewise, Web 2.0 tools will have the same benefits as a LMS.
As an online educator it is important that I design courses that use a variety of technologies that allow my
students to maximize their learning potential and represent their learning in a variety of ways. I need to choose tools that allow me to present, moderate, assess and support individual student learning. Because of my experiences in OLTD 504, I have the background knowledge required to build an effective online
course.
