OLTD Outcome Addressed: Understand,
design and commit to student success in online learning environments.
The specific evidence that I have chosen was the Teachers & Social Media in the BC Context – Boundaries research paper. In this piece, I wrote a paper about how educators must understand the boundaries related to digital footprints, privacy, social justice, and safety while developing policies that ensure the safety of all students.
This piece of evidence was created using a variety of articles and research materials provided by the instructor. For this assignment, I was asked to write a paper about how social media can be used as an educational tool and how British Columbia educators must understand the boundaries related to digital footprints, privacy, social justice, and safety while developing policies that aim to protect the most vital resource. Although, it took me a long time to research many of the topics, I can certainly appreciate the importance of establishing boundaries related to social media.
By completing this research paper, I learned that educators must understand the boundaries related to digital footprints, privacy, social justice, and safety while developing policies that ensure the safety of all students. I have come to the conclusion that social media can be used as an educational tool as long educators teach their students how to use it appropriately and how to protect their identity while using it. Equally as important, educators themselves need to be aware of the digital footprint they are creating and take steps to protect their professional image.
As an online educator, I need to be up-to-date with social media and teach my students proper etiquette will using social media. In addition, I need to teach my students how to stay safe and protect their identity while using social media. When I provide my students with the knowledge of how to use social media and how to protect their identity they will be engage in the activity and learning will take place. It is my job to stay up-to-date with social media so that my students can use the technology to maximize their learning potential. Because of my experiences in OLTD 506, I have the background knowledge required to use social media as an effective learning tool.

Evidence: Kidblog ResourcePackage
OLTD Outcome Addressed: Develop practical and technical skills in all phases of concept, development, design, implementation, etc.
The specific evidence that I have chosen was the Resource Package for using the social media tool called Kidblog . For this piece, I created a document that included activity Ideas, policy alignments, a permission slip and a backgrounder for parents.
This piece of evidence was one of my projects for OLTD 506. This project was designed to help me build the skills and the confidence to use social media in my f2f classroom. Additionally, this project was designed for me to create a useable document that I could share with my colleagues at VIU and within the teaching profession. Although I was unsure of the benefits of creating such a document, I quickly realized the benefits. I was able to use content from a variety of school district around the province to develop a comprehensive resource package for using social media to promote student learning.
By completing this assignment, I was able create a document that I could use in my f2f classroom. This document was designed to inform parents about the purpose and benefits of using a particular social media tool. In addition, this document was designed for educators to obtain parental consent, communicate potential risks, outline acceptable use policies, establish online etiquette and inform parents of their responsibilities. When creating policies for using social media tools, I needed to be aware of existing provincial guidelines for using social media tools in an educational setting. Social media tools can be beneficial for student learning as the efficiency is in the sharing.
As an online educator, it is important I use social media tools that allow my students to maximize their learning potential and represent their learning in a variety of ways. I need to choose tools that allow students to communicate, collaborate, share and learn in a positive and productive way. Because of my experiences in OLTD 506, I have the background knowledge required to use social media for educational purposes. All students have the capacity to learn, grow and mature intellectually and socially using social media if they are given opportunities to develop and practice the skills.
