Welcome To Michael Moynihan's Personal WebSpace
Welcome to my personal webspace. Here I will be documenting my learning journey through the Graduate Diploma in Online Learning and Teaching (OLTD) program at Vancouver Island University.
Sit back and enjoy the ride...
In 1990, I packed my bags and left behind my friends and family in Elora, Ontario. I moved to Nanaimo at the age of 22 in hopes of going to college. I received my teaching certificate in 1994 from Malaspina University/College. I completed my Bachelor of Education degree from Malaspina University/College in the summer of 2000.
In the fall of 1994, I became a TOC with the Nanaimo Ladysmith school district. After working as a TOC for two years, I received my first full time contract in a grade 6/7 class at Fairview Elementary. For the next seven years, I moved around from school to school taking whatever job I could get. I have been teaching grade 5 at North Cedar Intermediate for the past seven years. As part of my assignment at NCI, I am the lab administrator. Being a lab administrator has allowed me to learn more about computers and how to use them in an educational context. But, because of limited resources, the computers are older and somewhat limited.
Currently, I live just outside of Nanaimo in the great community of Cedar. I have lived there for just over 10 years. I have a wonderful wife Susan, whom I married 15 years ago. Together, we have a wonderful two and a half year old son named Lucas. I find it amazing to watch my son using technology like Skype to communicate with family members on the other side of the country.
Over the past three years, I have found myself posting more and more assignments on the internet. Many students and parents have found it very useful to be able access assignments online at anytime so that they can question, practice and review the content. One problem that I have found with posting assignments on the internet is that many low income families do not have the resources to pay for the technology (updated computers and internet connections) that is required to access the assignments.
